Arm Lift

Pearwood Plastic Surgery offers patients an effective, transformative way to remove that fat and tone their arms; an arm lift!

Are you tired of loose skin, sagging along the bottom of your arm? Sometimes referred to as “bye-bye” arms because of the jiggle when you move, this development can prove embarrassing for some people and make fitting into shirts difficult or uncomfortable.

Pearwood Plastic Surgery offers patients an effective, transformative way to remove that fat and tone their arms; an arm lift!

Pearwood Plastic Surgery - Arm Lift

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the underarm. Excess fat and skin between the armpit and elbow are removed and the remaining tissue is sculpted to provide a lifted, toned, and smooth result.

As we get older our skin loses its elasticity, changing its shape. Gravity will pull on this loose skin, causing it to sag and become areas for fat to collect. Exercise can strengthen and improve the tone of our arms but it cannot improve sagging skin.

This procedure may take one to three hours and will improve the appearance of your arms.

A surgical procedure will give you your best results while thoroughly removing all the unnecessary fat and skin. An arm lift will improve your body proportions while boosting your body image.

Dr. Murphy performs this procedure with precision and care. His extensive knowledge of human anatomy will help guide him to produce natural, toned results. Dr. Murphy has extensive training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He strives to help his patients and creates a safe, comfortable experience for them.

CANDIDATES

An arm lift is perfect for people who experience unflattering, loose underarm skin. This procedure will reduce fat deposits, tissue and skin to promote slim, attractive arms.

Men and women in their thirties to sixties commonly receive this procedure.

We encourage anyone who is interested in an arm lift to schedule a consultation to learn if the treatment is right for them.

Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and have lost a significant amount of weight may particularly benefit from an arm lift.

CONSULTATION WITH DR. MURPHY – BRACHIOPLASTY EXPERT

In your personal consultation, you will have the opportunity to share your concerns and aesthetic goals with Dr. Murphy. He will listen attentively and share his professional opinion on whether an arm lift will achieve your aesthetic goal. Dr. Murphy may suggest treatments to combine with your arm lift or an alternative solution that will give you your ideal appearance.

At Pearwood Plastic Surgery, we take the health and safety of our patients very seriously. Dr. Murphy will ask about your general health, current medication regimen, past surgeries, and any allergies. He will also perform an examination of your arms and test your skin elasticity. All of this information will help him understand how to perform a procedure that is safe and provides you with an excellent experience. Dr. Murphy will then walk you through the surgical procedure, potential risks, and the expected outcome.

We recognize that each patient has different anatomical features and will need their own personal treatment plan. Dr. Murphy will inform you of different incision patterns often used in arm lifts and will develop an incision method that will bear your best results.

We encourage our patients to ask questions. At Pearwood Plastic Surgery, we strive to inform our patients and help them understand the details of their arm lift process so they feel 100% confident and comfortable. Some questions to ask during your meeting include:

  • How long will this procedure take?
  • Where will the arm lift take place?
  • How long will the recovery process be?
  • Do you have before-and-after photos of previous surgeries?
  • Will I be able to wear long sleeve shirts and jackets following the procedure?
  • Do any before-and-after photos relate to my particular case?
  • What is expected of me to provide my best results?
  • Will I be able to move my arms immediately following the procedure?

Hopefully, these questions will act as a guide to stimulate new questions and surface concerns to discuss with Dr. Murphy.

Towards the end of your procedure, you and Dr. Murphy will schedule a date and time for your appointment. He will then give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery and recovery period.

HOW TO PREPARE

The best way to prepare for this procedure is to follow the instructions laid out by Dr. Murphy. Below, we have provided suggestions to help prepare you and improve your experience.

CREATE A RECOVERY SPACE

Set aside a specific location in your home where you can be comfortable and rest. Surround this space with medications, pillows, books, remotes and other forms of entertainment.

ARRANGE RIDES

You will need someone to drive you home following your surgery. During the first few days of your recovery, you will also not be able to drive, be sure to have some way to get around if you need to.

PICK-UP NECESSITIES

Prior to your procedure, you will want to pick up prescribed medications and any other necessities for your convenience. You may also need to pick up foods that can be easily prepared and eaten with minimal arm movement.

HELPING HANDS

In the first few days of your recovery, you won’t be able to do much. Having a friend or family member around to assist you will be very helpful. This may include helping you take medications and preparing meals.

On the morning of your appointment, be sure to wear loose fitting clothes that will not apply pressure to your arms.

THE ARM LIFT PROCEDURE

When you arrive for your appointment, you will be greeted by the surgical team. They will prepare your arms by cleaning and marking them. General anesthesia and sedative will be applied intravenously. Once you are resting and comfortable, Dr. Murphy will begin the surgical procedure.

An incision will be applied underneath the armpit and along the back of the arm. Incisions may differ based on the extent of work needing to be done. Excess skin and tissue are then removed through the incision. Dr. Murphy will contour the remaining skin and tissue to provide a beautiful, natural result. The incision will be closed with sutures and bandages will be placed atop them.

RECOVERY

After your procedure, your arms will be bruised, swollen and may be uncomfortable. Prescribed medications should help manage any pain. Your arms will be wrapped in bandages and compression garments to help control the swelling. Small tubes called drains may be placed just below the skin in incisions to help remove excess fluids or blood.

You will likely have a follow-up appointment a few days later to remove the drains and make any adjustments. Compression garments may be worn for a week or so to help your arm adjust to their new contour and position.

You will need to avoid lifting your arms above shoulder level for about three to four weeks. This also includes any activities that may stretch the incisions. Physical and athletic activities that involve your arms may need to be avoided for up to eight weeks. Swelling should decrease after a few weeks and patients often return to work after a week or two. Light activities such as driving are often resumedafter ten days.

BRACHIOPLASTY RESULTS

You will immediately notice slimmer arms! These results will improve as the swelling diminishes. Your results are long-lasting and will remain consistent with a healthy lifestyle. After the excess skin has been removed, you will enjoy toned, smooth arms.
